Yup, I have my first ever recurring role!!!
I just received the notice that I'll be playing Homicide Detective Mason Hunt in the Internet radioplay series "Nathan Cloud: Ace Attorney". He is, in the words of the director & writer for this series, dragoneye13 at Voice Acting Alliance, "very eager to do his work and often gives away info without a second thought, thinking it harmless." I like to think of him as Eddie Valiant from Who Framed Roger Rabbit meets Chief Wiggum=actually, it was Bob Hoskins in that movie that served as inspiration for the voice! Well, him and Steve Blum
Now, for the series itself, well, if you paid any attention to the part about Mason being a detective, it's a crime drama, inspired largely by the (very) popular Phonix Wright: Attorney at Law series of DS games. There will be 5 cases, each spread out for about 4-6 episodes. This first case, "Turnabout Champion" revolves around Nathan defending Joe Hart, a boxer accused of murdering his last opponent after losing in their champion match. I also, in this arc, play a bumbling rookie electrician named Cody Sparks, who, I'm guessing (because I haven't gotten the script yet
In addition to this series, I'm also appearing in two Batman audio/motion comics (they'll be put up on YouTube!)adaptions being put together by my friend, Ian Harrington. I play Professor Milo in "Batman: Arkham Asylum (Serious House on Serious Earth)", originally by Grant Morrison & Dave McKean (BTW, I can't find ANY info on the character. Batfans out there, PLEASE help!), & Martin Buttery & 3 random Mercenaries in "Batman: Low/Riddle Me That", originally written by Shane McCarthy (
Well, that's all for now; I'll post a link to the first Nathan Cloud episode once it's up!

Remember I was talking to you about Patlabor a little while ago?
Well, I have funds for a big, shiny DVD box set, if only I can find it!
Did you say you'd found a site that had the TV series in stock? I looked for the post where I think you mentioned it, but it has disappeared into DA land...
It's the 47 episode series I'm looking for. I've found a few sites that have region free copies advertised, but these aren't in stock wherever I look.
On the upside though, I did find a good deal on a region-free player through eBay UK: [link]
Hope this helps.
It looks like that's the old Akira Prestige Format Editions. I did mention these recently I think either in a journal or a discussion going on over at my journal - anyway, they definitely came up.
Those little trades are an expensive way of getting hold of the entire story, but the colour job by Steve Oliff is nothing short of eye-shattering. They're nice little books!
The original manga was serialised in Shonen Young magazine in Japan, one of the country's leading anthology series. As you may be aware, due to the vast output of manga in Japan, there was very little colour material appearing back in the day. Occasionally, a series would feature a few pages of full colour work whenever a new chapter or story arc began. But largely , the work would appear in black and white with tone effects applied.
When Marvel picked up the Western distribution rights for Akira, they realised that they'd have a hard time pitching it to a market that was now saturated with full colour titles, and so the desicion was made to hire a colourist.
Showing a great deal of sensitivity, Marvel worked with Otomo to select a colourist, and together they decided on Steve Oliff. His colour job on the Marvel Prestige format editions is nothing short of stunning!
Sadly, these slim trades represent a very expensive and risky route for anybody wanting to get hold of the entire story. They're also out of print. They surface on Ebay quite regularly though.
If I recall correctly, there have also been thick bound volumes that contained colour artwork, but to a much lower standard of traditional al comic-book colouring. So if you go looking for the books anytime, beware!
There is some indication of a new print run, thankfully. So watch the comics news sites!
I should have said, I don't check the news sites as often as I should. There's a wealth of superb resources out there.
In the case of Akira - here's the deal: The original license holders, Kodansha, have recently bought the rights back. This could mean a number of things, but we can all be assured that if they've spent money on it, they'll want to make money back. So a new print run looks 100% inevitable.
Things to look out for, however, include the quality of the translation (translations are owned as seperate entities from the art and story content themselves, believe it or not!) and the presentation style. Personally, I'd love to see reprints something like the old Marvel prestige editions, or maybe even a nice line of dinky tankoubons
And I'll give you a heads up on something else, courtesy of a friend in the know: Dark Horse just lost the rights to all of Masamune Shirow's stuff. So if you want to check out Dominion, Appleseed, Orion or Ghost In The Shell anytime soon, sell a couple of kidneys and get down to your local comic shop!
(HdE dESIGNS in no way endorse illegal organ trafficking, but if you must stoop to this, be sensible. Mug a tramp and use his kidneys instead!)
What? Have I gone too far?
